Two years ago, Carolina and her family moved to Long Beach, MS from Oregon. Where she used to live, she was part of a Facebook Group called Buy Nothing Project. She decided to start her own chapter here in our little town.
It wasn’t long before half the town, mainly women of course but there are some men in the group, were members. I became close friends with the admin Carolina and made many more friends in the group such as our socalled social worker, Rosie. The reason she is called our social worker is because youcan go to her for anything and be anonymous. She is a great therapist too.
If you are in need of something all you have to do is ask. People get rid of their things that would normally go to Goodwill or in the trash. This group has come together for people needing food, the homeless & if you need a small service it’s probably there too. It is a gifting economy. Everything is free, yes free.
I have seen small items and large items given away. In the Oregon group someone was gifted a car, yes a car. No ask is too big for this group. People have donated their time, knowledge and expertise.
Since Carolina started this wonderful group here, it grew so fast that she had to sprout into 3 small groups. You get to know your neighbors and possibly a new friend just by giving or receiving a gift from the group.
Carolina done such an amazing job with our community that we got together and nominated her for the Hometown Hero on our local news WXXV 25. Click the Hometown Hero link above to see how this wonderful group works.
This group is worldwide so you probably have one in your area. If there isn’t you can always checkout Buy Nothing Project and start your own chapter. Checkout your local BNP group and become part of the solution to kindness.
